day 4 & 5 // liturgy of the little things (2023)
I don’t know why it catches me off guard when goodness and beauty arrive in unexpected packages. Because isn’t that so often the case? Even when we are paying attention, eyes open to the world, the sacred seems to contain an element of surprise.
Suffice it to say, my weekend didn’t go as planned. Instead of celebrating my sister Laura’s birthday and knocking long-neglected household tasks off my list, I came down with some sort of illness and spent most of my time huddled under blankets or in bed. The little things did not arrive like I imagined. And yesterday’s post had to arrive a little late.
But goodness remains. Its substance is stable beneath the surface even here—less like glitter and more like the cozy blanket keeping my shivers at bay.
day four
I have a husband who does not hesitate to pick up the slack when I am sick, and today is one of those days. He’s downstairs making sure the boys clean the basement and stay out of the Halloween candy and brush their teeth. (Yes, those last two are related.) I can hear their ruckus and laughter rising through the floorboards and am reminded how unseen attention is rooted in extravagant love.
day five
Every day I look at these paintings and feel something like home. It’s that kind of knowing you can’t quite put words to. The kind that gently reaches out from hidden places and says, “Hello, you. I’ve been waiting.”
