A quick note if you’re new here: Human Together is a conversational podcast on the communal life. It’s for people who agree it is not good to be alone (but still secretly wonder whether it would be easier). In this season, we are going to springboard off the release of my recent book The Way of Belonging and take a deep-dive into the topic of belonging, bringing in voices, stories, insight, and ideas other than my own. My hope is that each conversation helps us widen our lens on what is a common but often-complex human ache.
About the Episode
Who we are and how we relate are intimately connected. In this episode, guest Kimberly Phinney shares how life-threatening illness shifted not only her sense of self but also her pursuit of belonging. Sarah and Kimberly talk about identity based on performance, expanding our definition of belonging, and valuing presence in the midst of pain.
